Welcome to the Rural Water Use Efficiency Initiative

Irrigation water is a scarce commodity and there are many changes occurring in the water industry.  As a result, a Rural Water Use Efficiency Initiative (RWUEI) has been initiated and funded by the Queensland Government through the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), BSES and CANEGROWERS are partners in this program.  The aim of the sugar industry scheme is to improve the water use efficiency by 6 per cent and to have 70 per cent of irrigators using best management practices by 2003.  CANEGROWERS, BSES and DNR aim to achieve these results through a jointly developed program, which began with a 'stock take' and will benchmark water use efficiency across the industry.  An adoption program, where best management practice will be development and implemented on farm, has followed.  The initiative will be evaluated to determine the cost/benefit of the project.

This web site is designed to supply the RWUEI stakeholders and the general public with information regarding the project.
